HCMC – As Typhoon Molave is forecast to make landfall in Vietnam’s central coast, Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) has suspended many train services on the Hanoi-HCMC route between October 27 and 28 to ensure the safety of passengers.

At the Hanoi station, the railway sector suspended the operations of the SE1 and SE2 trains set to ply on the north-south route today, October 27, and that of the SE7 departing tomorrow.

The SE4, SE8, SE22 trains, which are scheduled to depart from Saigon Station on October 27 and 28, are suspended. However, the railway sector will operate the SE2 train departing on October 27 on the Saigon-Dieu Tri route.

Besides, the SE21 train which is set to leave Danang Station on October 28 will also be halted.

Passengers who are affected by the suspension can get a refund. The train schedule for the next few days will be adjusted based on further weather developments, a VNR representative said.

VNR chairman Vu Anh Minh said that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and overlapping storms and flooding recently has left VNR’s business operations in the worst shape ever.

According to a report on the business performance results of VNR, the total volume of cargo transported by train during the January-September period this year reached over 3.6 million tons, equivalent to 99% of last year’s period. However, the railway sector served only some three million passengers in the nine months, equivalent to some 45% of the previous year’s figure.

Consequently, its revenue in the nine months declined by 34% or more than VND1.1 trillion.
