HCMC – Representatives of The Saigon Times Group, organizer of the “Saigon Times – Great Circle” program, on September 3 handed thousands of essential anti-pandemic products to the border guards of two Mekong Delta provinces of An Giang and Dong Thap to support them in the fight against Covid-19.

An Giang Province shares the 100-kilometer-long borderline with Cambodia. Since March, soldiers have been working at 136 checkpoints day and night to prevent the outbreak of the pandemic as well as illegal immigration, according to Colonel Pham Van Phong from the Border Guard of the province.

“Border guard forces have teamed up with local authorities to put over 3,000 immigrants under quarantine and handle more than 200 people who had entered the province illegally,” Colonel Phong said.

Bad weather and the long borderline, coupled with the coronavirus outbreak, have caused multiple difficulties for soldiers while guarding the border and patrolling, he added.

Colonel Phong also conveyed gratitude to The Saigon Times Group and donors for their support in the combat against the health crisis.

The Saigon Times Group’s Editor-in-Chief Tran Minh Hung said that the border guard forces play an important role in the fight against Covid-19, so since it was launched, the program has attracted the participation of many readers and enterprises.

“Donating these medical necessities is considered the best way to show our gratitude to border guard forces, who have made great sacrifices to bring the Vietnamese people security and peace,” said Hung.

Representatives of The Saigon Times Group and Nam A Bank donate face masks and hand sanitizers to the Dong Thap Border Guard

On the morning of the same day, the representatives of the Saigon Times Group also gifted 10,000 face masks and 200 hand sanitizer bottles which were donated by Nam A Bank to the border guard of Dong Thap Province.

The provincial Border Guard protects the 50-kilometer-long borderline shared with Cambodia. Some 15 checkpoints and patrol teams have been set up to carry out border pandemic prevention activities.

Truong Van Dang, director of the Dong Thap branch of Nam A Bank, said that accompanying border guards in the combat against the coronavirus pandemic is one of the lender’s long-term plans, adding that the bank was pleased to make a small contribution to the war against Covid-19.

Another donor of the program, South Can Tho University, gave each of the two provinces 100 hand sanitizer bottles.

The “Saigon Times – Great Circle” program’s third phase titled “Together we win Covid-19” is aimed at continuing to support the society to win the war against Covid-19.  This follows the success of the program’s first phase that sought to help poverty-stricken people overcome the hardships caused by the pandemic earlier this year and the second phase titled “Together with Vietnam’s Tourism.”

The third phase kicked off from mid-August and is focusing on sharing the difficulties of those who are at the frontline in the fight against the novel coronavirus along with the support of the business community and other donors.

For this purpose, the Saigon Times Group is calling on its readers—businesses and individuals alike—to participate in the program.
